Angry birds go RPG

Rovio Entertainment, the brains behind the popular game franchise, Angry Birds, has released a new title to the franchise. Angry Birds Legends is the series’ take on the role-playing genre. It is a card-based gacha RPG that stars the Angry Birds characters. The game sees a mysterious dark force infiltrate the world as the ongoing battle between the Angry Birds and the Bad Piggies rages on. Players need to assemble an unstoppable team to take down these evil forces that threaten all life.

Very generic gameplay

The gaming industry has seen the Angry Birds franchise slapped onto just about every casual game genre. In the classic game, players need to fling birds at a group of pigs using a slingshot. There are also other titles that employ bubble popping and match-3 gameplay. This time, fans of the game series can enjoy a new turn-based RPG designed for mobile.

For the most part, the game plays like any other generic free-to-play card-based RPG. In the game, players will form a team of four heroes, which they can use to battle the evil forces. Once in the match, they will need to select their team’s moves from the cards displayed at the bottom of the screen.

There are 19 characters to collect. You can summon them using the premium in-game currency. You can also make them powerful by making strength updates, such as leveling and star-up. All the characters in the Angry Birds Legends have basic abilities and an ultimate ability.

Interestingly, the cards you are dealt with can be moved and combined, just like in The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross. This allows for some strategy as you play to make it easier for you to win. As the game progress, you will have to upgrade your heroes to ensure that your team can take on as many foes as possible. Angry Birds Legends offers campaign and event modes.

Extremely repetitive

At a glance, Angry Birds Legend offers a polished game. The menus are not confusing and the screen is not littered with buttons. There is a short tutorial that players are forced to take for you to know how the game works. Rovio focused on clarity and ease of use that players don’t have to wonder how to go on about the game.

However, after a few matches, you will find that the game is extremely repetitive. The gameplay isn’t fun and every level plays the same. Additionally, the game has an absurd load time between menus. There are also cases where the first card introduced in the tutorial is not usable.

The game’s graphic design also needs a major overhaul as it needs to be sharper and clearer. More so, some character designs do not fit the characters at all. The game also needs more diverse enemies.

Running out of ideas

Taking things into consideration, Angry Birds Legends seemed to be a sign that Rovio is running out of ideas in creating a new game. The game is a clone of better games. It plays out like every other card-based RPG with pretty boring gameplay. Like the other Rovio games, it looks like money is the obvious driving factor, and the fun takes a backseat.
